Mount Victoria offers panoramic views of Auckland City, Rangitoto Island, the North Shore and the Hauraki Gulf. Starting at the top of the pretty seaside town of Devonport, the steep walk will take about 20 minutes to the summit. Alternatively, you can drive to the top where there is parking available.
Mount Victoria Reserve is a great (and free) way to see postcard views of the Auckland region.
The threat of Russian expansion into the Pacific stimulated construction of Auckland`s coastal defences. Mt Victoria, being the highest of Devonport`s volcanic cones at 283 feet (87m) was chosen for the Observation and Control Post. The great disappearing gun was mounted here. This gun it is the last of its type in New Zealand remaining on its original mounting. The gun was fired only once.
Mount Victoria is also home to Michael King Writers Centre, a historic cemetery and a water pumping station.
